Fishing in Elliot Lake is just one of the awesome adventures you will have when you come to this city.
Elliot Lake has over 1,000 lakes within city limits, and 90% of these lakes are home to sports fish. Species include lake trout, speckled trout, splake, northern pike, smallmouth bass, whitefish, ling (freshwater cod), walleye (pickerel), and rainbow trout.
Lakes like Dunlop and Quirke support lake trout, pickerel, and smallmouth bass in abundance. When fishing for lake trout, don’t be surprised if you catch fish in the 20 pound range. Pickerel as large as 12 pounds and smallmouth bass up to 7 pounds have also been caught in the area. If speckled (brook) trout is your preference, they can be caught and weighed at 8 or 9 pounds, and it’s not uncommon to catch northern pike weighing over 10 pounds, or whitefish over 5 pounds.
Winter fishing is another sport of choice for many locals. There is enough ice on smaller lakes in the area to go ice fishing as early as December. Larger lakes have 20 to 40 inches of ice from January through to early April.
Fishing for trout species is closed between September 30th and December 1st, with the exception of splake,
which is open year-round.
Live bait such as minnows, dew worms, and leeches are effective on all species of fish, and plastic baits also work throughout most seasons.
Most of the lakes along the Highway 108 corridor, coming into and beyond Elliot Lake, are stocked with several species of trout that are accessible without a boat.
Happy fishing!
